Sudan: Delivering Effective WASH Training Using Participatory Methodologies

Background

Globally there exists a capacity gap in the WASH sector due to a shortage in skills and unavailability of WASH professionals. A shortage in the competent and skilled national WASH workers affects the success and sustainability of WASH interventions thereby standing in the way of achieving country WASH strategic goals. To narrow this capacity gap, there is need for provision of more training and learning events that should be delivered by competent and skilled facilitators

Proper design of training and effective facilitation skills are essential for anyone seeking to guide a group of people through a process of learning or change in a way that encourages all members of the group to participate. Each person has a unique viewpoint and valuable knowledge to share. Without their contribution, the group’s ability to understand or respond to a situation is reduced.

This training is designed to enable practitioners and facilitators/trainers involved in the implementation of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activities improve their knowledge and skills to design and facilitate participatory training and community engagement processes that facilitate achievement of programme objectives in a sustained manner

Training Aim

To develop the skills and confidence needed to design and deliver effective participatory WASH training sessions.

Training Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be able to;

  • List the stage of training cycle and the key activities at each stage.
  • Becoming "learner - Centered " Trainers and practiced using participatory learning and action tools to draw out the knowledge of a group
  • Understood the difference between teaching and facilitating
  • Discussed the role of a facilitator and identified the qualities and skills of a good facilitator
  • Develop active listening and communication skills
  • Identify barriers and incentives to people’s participation in a discussion or learning process, and strategies for overcoming these barriers
  • Practice a number of facilitation skills and techniques and gain confidence in him /her self.

Training Methodology

This participatory style workshop includes theory, classroom exercises, open discussion, case studies, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. Active participant engagement in learning activities is encouraged.

Who should participate?

Participants may be individuals or groups who are:

  • Training on WASH, as part of a WASH, community development or health project
  • People seeking to enhance their facilitation skills
  • People who work with others and have to communicate to individuals or groups of people

Language

The workshop will be conducted in English, and Arabic.

The course will be facilitated by experienced national and international trainers of high level, with intimate knowledge of both local technical issues and international standards.

The course fee is 5000 SDG or 450 USD which covers tuition, training file and materials, a field visit and certificate of participation. Register early to book your place in the training.
